We give fresh colostrum to our premmies if they are started on feeds
straight away. Those that are NBM have their colostrum/EBM frozen until it is
needed.
According to our units Breast feeding manual colostrum/EBM from +ve CMV
mothers is frozen for up to 3 days before use.But many very small premmies
aren't started on feeds before this ,they are started on TPN & lipids whilst
we wait for their GI tract to be able to tolerate feeds ,babies with
unmature GI tracts are more prone to NEC and bowel perforations if fed
before they are ready to tolerate and absorb either EBM or formula.
