Dear Kathy,
I have a really neat picture somewhere of three horses - grandma is nursing mom who is simultaneously nursing baby. Grandma and mom are about the same size while baby is obviously a foal.
I think that babies of all ilk probably enjoy nursing very much and quit only when mom decides it's time or other forces intervene. Although I think that it is great when kids get to nurse for as long as they like, I don't necessarily think that it is "unnatural" for them to be weaned at some point, although it is probably always a bit of a sad time for any kind of baby and maybe for other kinds of moms besides humans.
Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
