A client of mine seems to be sensitive to silicone nipple shields. She got a
rash, only on the areolas, which did not bother her. It disappeared within
a day of discontinuing it's use. Then reappeared when she used it for two
feeds several days later. She has never experienced a contact dermatitis
before. Does any company make shields not of silicone? Or has anyone ever
used something between the breast and a shield that would still allow the
shield to cling? Any help would be appreciated as it may be some time
before this tiny-mouthed baby may be able to bring out mom's inverted
nipples. She also speaks of the shields having a greasy feel. Doesn't think
they come clean. She stopped using lanolin and discarded the old shields
but finds the new shields acquiring this same feel. She wonders if it's
because her husband has put dish soap (probably a detergent) directly on the
shields, then rinsed them. Any special cleaning suggestions?
Thank you,
Anne Grider, IBCLC, Marietta, GA
