Jessica, you say about Daktarin: "One of the biggest mistakes made here by
doctors is that they just
prescribe the gel and tell both mom and baby to use it. I have very rarely
seen it work on the mother. She is usually frustrated and in terrible pain
by this point. I always tell mother she needs to use the cream, and it
does not need to be wiped off."
This is exactly what we say here in the UK. Getting anything like a
reasonable combination of therapies for women and babies when thrush is an
issue is a nightmare. I found this article: Prescribing new drugs:
qualitative study of influences on consultants and general practitioners
Miren I Jones, Sheila M Greenfield, and Colin P Bradley BMJ 2001; 323: 378
of great interest -- the reasons given by GPs and consultants for trying new
drug therapies convinced me how far off we are (in UK, at any rate) from an
easy path to sensible prescribing for thrush in the breast of breastfeeding
women.
