I have had the joy of working with some wonderful staff here - outreach
workers and Public Health Nurses with the Black Infant Health (BIH)
program. They are great - and are very effective in reducing the number of
pre-term babies and low birthweight babies in the mothers they serve.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in working with this population
make contact with those who are running this program. They provide
services including classes on "empowerment" - and breastfeeding fits right
in there!

I was also making a presentation at WIC and was informed by one of the
staff who is also active in the NAACP that they have also come out with an
agenda promoting breastfeeding. Again, we need to reach out to them!

Sorry that this is so US-centered, but it's important to those of us who
truly believe that breastfeeding is a matter of public health.
