"The last posting that I could find on this subject in the archives was done
in Dec. 1998. At our local hospital it is still the protocol to do gastric
lavage on a newborn baby that is nauseous and spitting up. Is this still an
universal trend?"

I don't know whether it is a 'national trend' but I have seen it done on
babies in one Dutch Hospital quite routinely if they are spitting up and
"feeling sick". If they weren't feeling sick before, they were after. Can't
help but thinking that if these baby's were just held against their mothers
chest for most of the time, then they'd feel less sick than when layed flat
in a cot straight after a feed.
