She has seen the Lactation Counsellors at the hospital as well as one other
private practise IBCLC for her c/o sore nipples. Upon examination, her son
appeared in good health, no tight frenulum, but does have a receding chin
and a higher palate. His weight gain has been excellent and he appears to
be thriving. It is the mom, that has nipple pain with every feeding, who
is getting so frustrated. >>

I have just had two clients with the same problem. Neither of my clients had
OAMER, as I agree with Jean should be evaluated. Their births were
different--one only had stadol--no other interventions at all--quick first
baby. The other had everything except a cesarean, including induction,
epidural, vacuum. The second baby pinched more than the first. The first had
a more receding chin and sucked in her lips constantly. But both babies had a
very tight mouth, with what appeared to be a high palate. I did not believe
that either baby actually had a high palate, but that the palate was being
mis-shaped by some cranial trauma in the births. Neither baby had a deep
latch and even with correction of latch as best we could get the babies to
do, pain did not subside. (The second mom also has yeast and I believe she
has a secondary Reynaud's response). Both babies were referred for
chiropractic/CST (Dr Vallone, who is on this list, but away this week, can
speak far more technically about this treatment--and explains it really
well). The first baby took several treatments and another visit with me, but
is now nursing beautifully. The second baby has only had one treatment, but
mom is able to tolerate the feedings well enough to continue until she can
get another treatment. I urge any LC who has so far resisted working with a
CST to look for someone in your area (www.upledger.com). I have learned so
much from these practitioners and am 100% certain that some of these babies
never could have nursed w/o treatment.
