Dear Anne,
I always include a lesson in hand expression in my breastfeeding class, before I get into pumping. Everyone gets a balloon - we usually use the ones from Medela, but really any small round or oval balloons will work. They blow them up to just a little bigger than a fist and tie them off. I then have them hold the balloon up next to their chest and do the technique basically as described by Marmet, as I am demonstrating. It seems to go over well and I make the point that many women have used nothing but hand expression to collect milk for their babies, relieve engorgment, etc.
t
Warmly,
