Neurontin (gabapentin) is considered the most benign of the
anticonvulsants. It does not affect the liver, does not depress bone
marrow, and has relatively few drug interactions. It works by
increasing GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) in the brain. GABA is a
naturally occuring inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it reduces the
activity of neurons. There is some research indicating that GABA levels
may be decreased and/or GABA receptors malformed in persons with
epilepsy.
Dr. Hale says that there are no reported pediatric concerns, and
classifies this drug L3 (Moderately Safe).
