Karen writes, "Also, the very nature of eczema is that it waxes and wanes in an
unpredictable fashion, which makes it difficult and often frustrating to try
and identify individual triggers."
This is really important to understand since you can drive yourself crazy trying to discover the cause of the latest excema breakout. Environmental and diet control are important, but don't beat yourself up everytime he gets worse because you think that you did something wrong.
My very allergic child lived on breastmilk, fruit, and all things rice for a very long time while very slowly transitioning to solids. I made a very basic sweet rice bread which he liked a lot. He gradually outgrew a lot of his allergies, but did develop asthma at around age 5 - mainly a reaction to a cat we had been away from on vacation and were then re-united with, bringing on his first attack. Fortuneately, his asthma was never really terrible - I'd like to think that 5 years of breastfeeding had something to do with that.
What I worry about is that all this will return at a later age as it has in my husband who now suffers from severe, multiple food allergies and asthma. However, my husband was never breastfed, so I am holding out hope that this will somehow help my son to avoid a reoccurance in middle-age.
Warmly,
