Since tight frenums can make breastfeeding difficult and some dentist and
physicians recommend moms stop breastfeeding because of the caries issue, I
thought it might be appropriate to post this note on Lactnet.
I have just placed a presentation on frenums on my website. I am hoping it
will help resolve the frenum issue. I do not consider myself an expert on
the topic of frenums, but I have probably evaluated and researched frenums
longer than anyone else in the world that I know of. The presentation is
designed to help educate everyone, including physicians, lactation
consultants, midwives, dentists, other health care providers, and especially
moms.
The infant caries presentation and article I have authored on caries is also
on the website. Hopefully it will help educate the same people as above on
the issue of infant caries and breastfeeding. I challenge any dentists or
organization in the world to produce in laboratory research with breastmilk
as the control that demonstrates that breastmilk causes infant decay. For
anyone who is told to stop breastfeeding because of the risk of infant decay,
I recommend that you ask that health care provider, either a physician or
dentist, to SHOW you such research. I do not believe that research exists!
The presentations and articles on the website are downloadable free of
charge. Feel free to share my presentations and/or articles with anyone in
the world. If you are challenged by either the frenum or caries issues, just
tell whoever is challenging you, to visit my site. You could even download
the information and give the information to them on a CD. Feel free to use
the information in discussion groups or in classroom settings.
The most important research I have done as it relates to breastfeeding is in
the area of sleep apnea. Read my "Summary of Points," article on "How
breastfeeding reduces the risk of sleep apnea," and then view presentation on
sleep apnea. I touch on this relationship in the last section. That
presentation will follow in the future along with other topics such as otitis
media and SIDS. My research on sleep apnea will probably not be appreciated
until about 20 years after I am gone, but at least I am planting the seed for
others to benefit.
You have my permission to copy and post this note on other sites if you think
this information might help others.
