"Some people were brought up that way and continue the practice with their
children. Others do it because they can't afford a safe crib or bassinet.
"The problem is a cultural issue, a convenience issue and a monetary issue,"
Lanza said. "Some people do it because they're worried about (Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome) and they think they'll be able to hear the baby stop
breathing. The problem there is you can't hear something that doesn't make a
sound."
SIDS is classified as any infant death where a reason cannot be established.
Many health officials attribute most of the deaths to the position of the
sleeping baby."
Smoking and ABM use not mentioned as risk factors in SIDS, nor are the 8
deaths due to suffocation (from "co-sleeping") broken down by other factors.
