Several months ago, I posted about a mom with breast cancer. I just wanted
to offer a little follow up. She consented to removal of both breasts.
Explained to her daughter that mommy's breasts were sick and weaned her.
Actually ended up with second surgery to remove even more tissue. As it
turns out, the "healthy" breast, was not so healthy afterall. There were
cancer cells found even though nothing showed up on the mammogram. She is in
the process of the reconstruction surgery which is an ordeal itself. The
reason for this post is to share a beautiful gift her daughter gave her. The
child, missing nursing, has found she can indeed nurse. She has found she can
suck just fine on the breast-like formed skin even though there are not even
nipples yet. Mom has no sensation, but is touched her daughter has chosen to
nurse without milk. When I heard this, I cried. Cried for the loss of the
nursing that meant so much to her, the breasts she valued as part of her
motherhood, and the children she may have someday that will never taste her
milk. I just wanted to share that the package is indeed as important as the
product with those who understand--as only people who value breastfeeding
beyond the value of the milk can.

Thanks to all of you who helped her, it meant so much that "strangers" would
reach out and make a difference.
