You ask how to tactfully, and with noone going on the defensive, present to
the surgeon the option of not weaning for the biopsy. Let's pretend the
mother wanted to kill some plant fungus in her garden. The gardener tells
her that she must dig the plants out and throw them away, there is no
treatment for this fungus. You know of a new treatment so you share this
with the mom and the gardener. No one gets defensive. Everyone learns.
(stupid analogy i guess, sorry). Well do this similarly in this situation.
Find your references first. I am pretty sure Dr. Jack addresses this well in
his book (not in front of me now - it's at work). Then share with the mom
that this has been done very successfully with other moms. Ask if she would
like you to share this with the surgeon (surely she would). Then call or fax
to him saying very matter of factly, this mom really wants to bf, here is
some interesting information I thought you would like to have. I would be
happy to assist her with the bf and the recovery of that breast if needed.
Don't assume a defensive position or that he will have one. If he is
dead-set against it for whatever reason, then it is up to the mom to decide
to proceed or seek second opinion. Barbara Wilson-Clay has I know at least
one wonderful post about corresponding with doctors in a prof. way, or maybe
it's in her book "The BF Atlas." Worth a check of the archives.
