One of my friends and coworkers who is also a nurse told me the story of
when she had her first child (20+ years ago) and was hospitalized in a
locked psych ward for a week for PPP. She and her dd were in the hospital
longer than usual because her daughter was jaundiced (ABO issues). She was
breastfeeding (but now knows it was ineffectively) One day her nurse came
to her room to find her jumping on the bed like a kid, in my friends mind
she was 8 years old. Her family has a very strong history of bipolar
disease. She says that with her next 3 children the day her milk came in
(she bottlfed them because she didn't think she was able to breastfeed,
since when they put her in the locked psych ward all attempts to breastfeed
were stopped) she would have hallucinations for a few hours. She new to
expect them so she was able to handle it at home by herself, while she just
waited for them to go away..
