I received a call from a mother of 8 1/2 month old.
Baby has 2 meals of solids daily, breastfeeds 6-8
times. Mother takes tegretol, but her EEG shows
persistent seizure activity, particularly with sleep
deprivation. Mother's neurologist wants her to take
carbatrol 300mg twice a day (She currently takes
tegretol 400mg in the am,200mg at bedtime). I wasn't
able to find it in Hale. MD stated it is a long-acting
carbamazepine, states it is safe to breastfeed with this
drug. It was my understanding that time-released drugs
should be avoided while breastfeeding. Does anyone have
info re: carbatrol?
