Hello Everyone,
My name is Sandra Fideldy, and I am a junior nursing student of Cindy
Anderson's at the University of North Dakota. I have been doing some
research about fibrocystic breast disease related to breastfeeding. I
understand that fibrocystic breast disease is a broad term that refers
to a variety of symptoms, and that probably affect about 50% of women
during their premenopausal years(Fiorica, Schorr, Sickles, & Glaser,
1997).
From what I've found so far, there are absolutely no contraindications
for breastfeeding because of this disease. Breastfeeding has actually
delayed the symptoms for some women (Mohrbacher & Stock, 1997). I did a
search of the archives, but there was not much pertinent information on
this subject in the recent past.
In addition to the research I have done for my class, I have a personal
interest in fibrocystic breast disease. I have been diagnosed with
fibrocystic breasts, and my mother has had fibrocystic breasts since
about the age of 20. She has had about 5-6 biopsies/lumpectomies in the
past 10 years or so. She breastfed my two siblings and myself for about
7 months each, until she "went dry" with each of us. Do you think there
a relationship between fibrocystic breasts and the problems my mother
had with breastfeeding? I haven't been able to locate any literature
regarding the long-terms effects of breastfeeding on women with
fibrocystic breasts or vice versa. Does anyone have insight,
references, or experiences on this subject?
Thank you much for any information that you may be able to share with
me!
