This was sent to me on my LLL Leader list here in San Diego by my
Professional Liaison. I found it quite informative (as a Leader) and
applaud the American Family Physician for publishing it. Now lets just hope
the Family Physicians who read it, take heed and follow it!

<<This week's issue of American Family Physician contains a wonderful
article on Medications in Breastfeeding Mothers. The lead author is the
vice-chair of the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Task Force. The article
provides general principles, lists drugs in various categories that might be
needed by breastfeeding mothers, such as cold meds, anti-hypertensives,
etc., that are safe. One thing I noted happily was that it states that in
general nursing mothers should be allowed to breastfeed after surgery as
soon as she is alert and willing. It also
provides a comparison of the various resources for medication information,
indicating that the
Physicians Desk Reference is *not* a good source for drug information, and
listing better resources.>>
