I have been reading your excellent information for a while, but this is my
first time to send a post. I had a question yesterday from one of our NICU
nurses. A mother of a 26 week gestation baby had been on Prozac throughout
her pregnancy. She wants to breastfeed and stopped the Prozac two days ago.
The nurse wanted to know how long she needed to "pump and dump." The
half-life for Prozac is 2-3 days and using the 5 half-life "rule" we have
heard before, another Lactation Consultant and myself decided on 10-15 days.
We could find no information specifically about this in all of our numerous
reference books and decided we needed to err on the side of safety for this
very young infant. Did we give the proper information? Thanks for your help.
