Nuala Murphy reports on a mother who was told that the acid she perceived to
be in her own stomach could have gotten into her milk and kept her baby up
all night crying.
I don't know that there needs to be a physical, chemical explanation for why
a baby whose mother has been stressed like this, might also be upset the
same day. It is also possible that the stress of testifying in court caused
a temporary reduction in the mother's milk supply, with a consequently
unhappy baby who needed to be at the breast to rectify the situation.
The pH of milk is quite narrowly regulated by the breast. Gastric
secretions have a MUCH lower pH than milk. Spill a little adult vomit and a
little expressed breast milk on a varnished floor and let it sit overnight
and compare.
I bet the baby will calm down once things settle down for the mother. Good
luck.
