><I have recently gotten a question about thrush treatment by a lady who is
>bf
>9 mo twins & lives in France. < >It sounds like the babies have oral
thrush and the mother is asymptomatic.
>Is this right? Daktarin is probably the oral gel, and should be given four
>times a day, after feeds and should be continued for a week after any signs
>of thrush have gone. I wouldn't be treating the mother if she has no pain.
>If her nipples are sore, the first line of treatment is the same gel on the
>nipples (before bringing out the fluconazole).
Here in the UK I have had mothers prescribed the gel for their nipples and I
have asked Wendy Jones (who is not on LactNet at the moment, I think) about
this (Wendy is a pharmacist). She says that gel is not the best formulation
for skin and we would always suggest that women use Daktarin CREAM on their
nipples. The gel tends to warm up and slide right off the skin.
Daktarin is miconazole and is available here on prescription and over the
counter (for athlete's foot, so is handily sold with a pic of cute little
blue feet on the box -- enticing for the new mother to apply to her tender
breast).
I had to explain to a mum I was speaking to yesterday that she better get
bothher Daktarin fixed up before she takes her baby home for a visit to the
States -- due to strange disonances in what can be obtained where.
