For all of my adult life I've been a vocal proponent of free universal
access to basic health care as a human right. I haven't been involved in
the sales or rental of any commercial product for some years now. I refuse
to serve on any charitable board that accepts formula or cigarette money. I
got audited last year and the IRS owed ME money!! Consequently, while my
credentials as a capitalist are a bit suspect, may I point out that the
final letter in IBCLC refers to being a "CONSULTANT." A consultant is, by
definition, one who accepts financial remuneration for his/her services.
While a good waitress makes more than most IBCLCs do, we do subscribe to a
Code of Ethics. Our ethical constrains with regards to our income follow on
from 3 essential principles:
1. To safeguard the interests of individual clients
2. To justify the public trust
3. To enhance the reputation of the profession
Providing the company in question is not in violation of the WHO code, we
are free to safeguard the interests of individual corporate clients by
consulting with them for a fee.
When we disclose our associations (as I am routinely required to do when I
lecture) then people can form their own opinions of our positions . We are
NOT required to provide details of our income to individuals.
The reputation of the profession is enhanced when we treat one another with
courtesy and respect for mutual efforts. It is not served when unprovoked
personal attacks such as Janie's on Kathleen Bruce substitute for reasonable
discourse. Whose agenda is in play in this conversation, anyway?
As for me, I have two kids in college. I do contract work GRATEFULLY for
whoever pays me unless it violates the IBLCE Code, the WHO Code, or unless I
just plain don't like them.
