Dear Lactnetters,
I have a problem i have not encountered before:
A G2P1 lady who came originally to hospital with D&V at 38 weeks, She is a
medium dark skin tones Pakistani lady. on observations she was seem to be
jaundiced which was increasing to include her conjunctiva, as it was
discovered she had #membranes with the vomiting and was contracting. FH was
160, so given Em LSCS. Now when she went to feed her baby she was told that
being an active Hepatitis A she could not feed the baby as she would infect
the baby!
I would have thought that feeding the baby would have been a sensible option
as the Maternal Antibodies would protect the baby!
What do others say. The lady is not as unwell now since the LSCS and
vomiting and Diarrhoea subsided.
She asked me why she was prevented from BF- I couldn't answer her,
"When I asked the doctor she could not come up with a good reason than she
is infecting the baby if she feeds!"
Please can someone give me a better answer(factual)!
