A very motivated new mom in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, needs an LC's input.
I know very few details. She is the cousin of a LLLL here in Michigan, so
even what I do know is third hand. Mom needed a transfusion following the
birth last week. Baby was born at 9# 9 oz. and weighed 8# 5 oz. today.
More significant than the weight loss, IMO, is that baby wasn't stooling (I
don't know for how long). Her doctor advised pedialyte after every nursing.
After today's weigh-in, she was advised to nurse 5 min/side, and switch
once, and then give formula after every nursing. The physisian "requires" a
1 oz/day gain during the next week.
The mother describes her experience thus far as "brutal."
The LLLL plans to contact the mom for more specifics, but would like to
refer her to a knowledgeable LC who could observe for latch, milk transfer,
etc.
TIA
Anne Cook
