(with her sardonic comment -- "Yummy, yummy") was surprising. Given the
permeability of the newborn gut, and the possibility of an allergic
reaction, wouldn't there be strong concerns about giving newborns even
tastes of substances like quinine and corn oil? I thought corn was a
common allergen -- is the oil, since it's minus the proteins, less of an
issue? (And not that formula isn't equally foreign to a newborn, but
that's a different post.) How do researchers get approval for a
particular study involving human subjects, especially babies, who can't
be giving their informed consent for this -- is there some kind of
central authority?
