Hi, Renate! No, no, no--would I mislead you? :-) These things are cool!
The baby isn't sleeping on plastic, the frame is rigid plastic completely
covered by a padded fabric cover. (Think about plastic car seat frames
covered by a padded fabric cover). The mattress is vinyl covered foam (like
most crib mattresses) with a tight envelope cotton sheet over it.
I don't think the issue with water beds is the plastic (who would sleep on
one without a sheet?), but the fact that many of them aren't firm surfaces
and baby could (sleeping prone) get his nose buried into it, or get trapped
where the edges scoop down into the frame.
