I remember in a psychology class being given the illustration of an
orphanage (don't remember which country or culture--but this was about
100 years ago or turn of the century) where babies were all placed in
their cribs .

Mortality rate was nearly 100% as there was not much staff allocated.
All the babies died but one in an end row crib. This proved consistent
over the years.

Someone decided to try detective work as to why infants in this crib
survived. They knew what happened during the day as people were there.
Someone hid to see what happened at night.

A lone cleaning woman always walked in the aisle where that single crib
was and would awaken and play with and give attention to the baby at
night only in that one crib. That single human touch was what always
made the infant in that crib survive. It changed the course of how
babies needs for socialization were viewed.

Does anyone know the source?
