Think about the formula companies ultimate goal in giving Drs. their own
personal stash of formula, be it for the female Dr. or the male Dr's. Wife.
I've enountered many a Dr. who has personal stories of not being able to
breastfeed or who's wife was unable to breastfeed. It seems, like with most
anyone else, they are willing to share their stories of soley breastfeeding
being the impossible. Like anyone else, that formula is there, in the house,
ready for the next growth spurt, pump crisis, or fussy baby. Then, like
anyone else-misery loves company. It goes back to that inner thought of my
wife couldn't breastfeed or I couldn't/didn't breastfeed so how can I
recommend that to my patient?
I did an experiment a few months back. I went to one of the baby clubs and
joined. I inserted a false due date and checked that I would be SOLEY
breastfeeding. I waited for my due date to arrive. Sure enough...the mailman
showed up with a package. They'd sent a big can of formula (powdered-sells
for $11 in my area). AND, a smaller sample of Soy! It really bothers me that
even though I'd checked soley breastfeeding, no formula they STILL sent this.
