I had my Dateline interview today. I *think* it went very well. I did make
a sweeping generalization that many US pediatricians are not very
knowledgeable about or supportive of long-term breastfeeding, because they
didn't learn anything about it in medical school and don't keep up with the
literature. I said that many mothers are told by pediatricians that their
milk is nutritionally worthless after "X" amount of time, or that all the
benefits have been received by the child by "X" age, and that many
pediatricians also claim the AAP recommendations say to "wean at one year"
rather than one year as the minimum. And that many women would have nursed
longer if not discouraged from it by their pediatrician.
So . . . the folks at Dateline want to talk to some pediatricians who give
out bad information. So, all those of you who know pediatricians like this,
please send contact information for the pediatrician to producer Betsy Osha,
at [log in to unmask]
They won't tell the pediatrician who gave them the name.
Linda Smith, if you're reading this, your book on 101 stupid reasons to
wean, would be perfect for this purpose, in addition to the names of actual
bad pediatricians.
