First, I wanted to thank all of you who responded to my inquiries about
whether babies are attached at birth. All of the responses were very
helpful in my finding resources, and in thinking through the argument on this.
However, today I finally received the Journal article that I mentioned was
written by Lamb (advocating alternating overnight stays for infants), and
what I wrote really surprised me:
"When mothers are breast-feeding, there is considerable hesitation,
indecision, and perhaps strong maternal resistance regarding extended
overnight or full-day separations. Breast-feeding is obviously one of the
important contexts in which attachments are promoted, although it is by no
means an essential context. Indeed, there is no evidence that breast-fed
babies form closer or more secure relationships to their parents than do
bottle-fed babies. A father can feed an infant with the mother's expressed
milk, particularly after nursing routines are well established." Kelly
and Lamb, "Using Child Development Research to Make Appropriate Custody and
Access Decisions for Young Children", Family and Conciliation Courts
Review, Vol. 38, No. 3, July 2000, pages 306-7.
OK. I am writing a response to these articles. And I need to be citing to
something regarding breastfeeding as it relates to attachment, bonding,
separation. I can cite to treatises, books, journal articles, even other
articles although the more professional the better. I am not an IBCLC, and
I don't own treatises on lactation. The most technical thing I own is the
Breastfeeding Answer Book. I know that there are so many good books on
lactation, but I don't know if they have chapters, sections or even
paragraphs on these issues - attachment, bonding, separation, or anything
that would deal with the issues raised in the quotes, I need them. I am
more than willing to buy books if I need to, but I just don't want to spend
hundreds of dollars on books that don't have what I want. Can any of you
help me?
Thanks!
