I have a mom with a 15 month old dtr, her nipples are now very sore. History
is that about 31/2 weeks ago baby dx with "stomatitis". Viral blisters in
mouth. Initially peds that was either thrush or herpes, but decided above
and essentially treated like herpangina...benadryl and maalox mixture for
comfort only...no other meds for baby. Baby's mouth did have blisters on
tongue but resolved with the meds and time of about 2 weeks. At the end of
that 2 weeks, mom developed blisters and sores on nipples, very bad cracked
and painful. Initally given nystatin...not helpful. Then given Dr Jack's
APNO...that helped with pain tremondously in first 24 hours, but after a
weeks of use, still no improvement in condition of nipples and still with
pain. Mom is already feeding one breast per feed about every 3-4 hours. I
have advised her to try bendaryl/maalox mixture for 24 hours and I am going
to get back with her. I have not actually seen her, although she has been
evaluated by both an IBCLC and her OB, which say is not thrush, although we
have treated for that anyway. I did ask about ezema and psorasis, new
powders etc but that was negative.
Any suggestions?
Stumped...
