Rachel, once again, I enjoy reading your ideas.
As a resident of the US, we do have a segment of our
population living under bridges...what we also have is
a larger segment of the populace so sunk into debt
that a mom with a new baby may feel she has no choice
but to go back to work at 6-8 weeks post-birth. An
average family of 4 carries something like 25-30
THOUSAND dollars of debt, not including the mortgage
on the home (please, if anyone out there knows
otherwise, chime in...). The pressure to keep up to a
certain standard of living is intense; many couples
may not realize that "downgrading" can allow their
children to be home with a parent while that child is
an infant, and beyond. I feel this has a profound
effect on a working mom's perceptions of bfing; my
heart breaks for moms who say they "have" to go back
to work in 6 weeks. They are so overwhelmed, they
honestly feel they have no alternatives.
Just musing on one of the aspects of current American
culture!
Carole
