Oh, Wise ones,
I had a mother call me last evening. She is desparate. She is talking
to everyone she can think of about her daughter's problem hoping that
someone will have some ideas as she and the pediatrician have almost
exhausted their thoughts and work up. I asked her if I could present this
to you...
Her 10 mo/old daughter has been exclusively BF. She continues to be
so. When she tried food once in Jan. (when she was 5-6 mo old) the baby did
fine, but soon after the first bit of food the baby began to vomit. She
describes her to be OK for an hour or so then she vomits and it goes on for
a long time. She retches hard bringing up not only the food she just ate
but bile. She originally thought the baby had the flu, gave her gut a rest
and went on to feed her again. Same thing. So that now everytime she feeds
her food, she vomits this way. So she doesn't feed her whole food very
often and loalths the idea of it. Now, since she is developmentaly becoming
more and more interested in seeing her world and exporing, she doesn't stay
at the breast long and is at 25% for weight. So mom is worrying more
recently.
The pediatrician, allergist, GI specialist have worked up this little
one. She has had lab work, MRI, allergy tests, Ultrasounds, etc. Sounds
like the ruled out reflux. So far the only thing they can find is that she
is allergic to egg whites. Mom has looked on the labels of the rice cereal,
peaches and pears that she has tried. The only thing that is the same is
vitamins and zinc. The MRI is negative as are all the other tests. This
Friday she is taking her to a "Feeding Specialist", she said over the phone
that they didn't offer much hope from the rudamentary summary mom shared
with them.
I'm baffled. Any of you know something that may be a lead in figuring
this out? Mom says she is developmentally normal, doing all that a 10 mo
old does. She sits, does hand to mouth activities, plays, etc. She doesn't
walk yet, but at 10 mo that's not abnormal.
Poor mom. I'd appreciate anything you can share privately or on the
list. Thanks in advance.
