Claudia, We have 7 day coverage, usually 2 LCs for about10 hours, each doing
eight hours shifts. We use beepers in hospital as well as phone messages
for outside and inside requests. We work holidays with one consultant. Our
hours are 8 am to 6 pm, except for overtime! We have initiated a lactation
referral code where nurses post room numbers and reason for request based on
our policy because we do not see every BF mom--primarily ones having
difficulty, twins, MD request, latch issues, etc. It has helped us to
prioritize our time. We also have a NICU so set up pumps and assist with
latch when babies are ready to go home. We do 7000 births per year. We
have one full-time LC, three part-time and we are about to request an
outpatient program where one consultant would be dedicated 2 days per week
for 4 hours, seeing outpatients and making follow-up phone calls. We also
answer phone questions and determine whether a visit is necessary at the
present time. We are beginning a one hour Breastfeeding Class for one hour
3 days a week as a pilot, have 2 support groups per month for 1 1/2 hours
each session. We see approximately 300 Bf mothers per month on the floor.
I think that covers it. Are we tired? Yes!
Sincerely,
Patricia Ellis, RN, MA, IBCLC
