Allergy Fears Prompt Infant Formula Recall
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 31 - A nationwide alert has been issued by
Mead Johnson Nutritionals about potential allergic reactions to ingredients
in their LactoFree infant formula sample packs.

"Infants allergic to milk protein run the risk of a serious or
life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product," the US
Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.

The recalled formula packs were shipped to 30 different stores in Colorado,
Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
No other sizes or forms of the LactoFree formula are affected.

To date, no consumers or healthcare professionals have reported any allergic
reactions or illness caused by the formula. "While the chances of a child
with high sensitivity to milk protein consuming this product may be
extremely small, we are unwilling to risk a reaction in even one child who
may be hypersensitive to milk protein," Dr. J. Roberto Moran, vice president
of Global Medical Affairs for Mead Johnson Nutritionals, said in a
statement.

Consumers are being asked to return the items to the store where purchased
for a full refund, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. Mead
Johnson Nutritionals is expected to have correctly labeled packages of
LactoFree infant formula sample packs on store shelves by July 30. For more
information contact Mead Johnson Nutritionals at 1-888-222-9223.
