Cheryl,
This came up recently in a discussion at our facility. We have no set policy on
this and are subject to the whims of our various pediatricians. Some will only
allow us less than 24 hours with breastfeeding "attempts" documented and others
are more lenient but no one will allow us to go 48 hours with no documented
successful feeding. Of course part of this has to do with the fact that most of
our moms and babes are being discharged at 48 hours.
How did you convince the pediatricians that 48 hours is a safe and reasonable cut
off point? I would love to be able to come up with a standard that everyone can
adhere to (within reason).
I think it would make everyone more comfortable when a baby needs more time to
"come to the party".
