Just as I now talk about the benefits rather than the advantages of bf, I
also avoid talking about *support* groups.
When I think about support groups I think about ppl with problems.
Alcoholics and smokers use support groups. They have unhealthy behaviours
they are trying to change.
Breastfeeding is a healthy behaviour. It is normal. What breastfeeding
mothers need is information and encouragement. What we support is their
DECISIONS.
Bf mothers' groups are in a different catagory. I can quite see why it might
be difficult for a bf mother to understand why she would need what SHE might
see as an AA type meeting. I entice mothers to meetings by mentioning that
they are a good place to meet other nursing women and make friends, and what
a relief it can be to find someone else who has BTDT. Getting mothers to
meetings is the hard part, keeping them coming is easier.
