My informant who said that the WHA had adopted the new Resolution by consensus was not quite accurate. I apologize for sending along her report without further verifying it. HOwever, the IBFAN Geneva website, which is updated daily, has the following notice:
"16 May 2001 - The proposed Resolution on infant and young child feeding passed the Committee stage at the World Health Assembly this afternoon. The Committee accepted the "6 months" recommendation of the WHO expert consultation on the optimal duration of exclusive breastfeeding (see section 3.3 of the Resolution). The Resolution will go forward to the full session of the World Health Assembly next week for formal adoption. A press release will be posted shortly."
With apologies for being too much in a hurry to share the good news -- and it is good, but not yet conclusive. Stay tuned or check the IBFAN website: www.ibfan.org/english/news
