Jean Ridler asked about hand expression as a way to solve our pump
problem (or lack of them!). according to our info (and correct me if I
am wrong) hand expression alone doesn't increase serum prolactin levels
high enough for the purposes of relactation. As for the returning to
work mums we sometimes suggest as an option, and offer pumps to the
women returning after the obligatory 45 days (some only 2 weeks!). no
women we see get adequate time or space to pump, many diving into the
bathroom for 5 minutes or less between phone calls or the like, so they
seem to find pumping faster than hand expression, which the studies
quoted in Lawrence also found. We are careful when suggesting pumps,
even more careful when handing them out, and always show mums how to
hand express as a priority. Unfortunately we see a lot of mums
interested in relactation after a less than optimal breastfeeding
experience in the early weeks/months. We feel that hospital grade
electrical pumps with double pumping are the most suitable for them, but
if you have experience otherwise please let me know.
