I always feel that formula supplementation is a barrier that shouldn't be
breached if possible, but that once it's breached, an "in for a penny, in
for a pound" attitude makes sense, and it ought to be used as liberally as
is needed.  Am I right?

If a baby comes to me who's already been supplemented, I don't worry about
the amount of continuing supplementation (so long as we're supporting the
breastfeeding fully, of course).  But if a baby *hasn't* been exposed, I'd
rather see him gain less than optimally for a short time than break the
barrier.  If the barrier's been broken, I tend to encourage mom to "pour it
in - all he wants".

What attitudes do others have, and what's your justification?
