Marsha, happy, happy day to you celebrating and
remembering your son's birth!
Every year I celebrate my daughter's birth by talking
to her about how much bigger my life became when she
entered it. I remember being startled when she first
began to speak and told me how lucky she was to have
me for her mother -- my own exuberant daily words to
her. I realized then how much she listened to me, and
how tremendously we impact our children in the little
things we say & do each and every day.
I like to think that our daughters and sons will bring
our rapture for them into their own experiences of
mothering and fathering.
Here on Lactnet we often talk about practices,
policies, & salable ideas that undermine
breastfeeding. These practices (not exactly
evidence-based, I might add!) often undermine the
sublime moments of motherhood. Breastfeeding is so
much more than positioning, timing, & milk
composition. It is wonderful to share so much more:
the intuition, the belief in women, the strength of
community, over and over a woman falling in love with
her most-extraordinary baby. If only every baby could
be so loved and celebrated.
Thank you, Marsha, for sharing your celebration with
us. Happy birthday to your son, and to you!
Susan
