Who is the Real Authority on House Problems?

"If you line up ten individuals who are somewhat knowledgeable about
construction and ask each of them the solution to a particular problem, you
will probably get ten different answers. The construction field is so broad
and so involved that it is literally impossible for one source to provide
all answers and be reasonably authoritative. People in the contruction
fields are often so proud that they will offer answers even when they may
not be well founded.

"It is unfortunate that no one authority exists in construction matters, and
that more often than not solutions to problems are subject to considerable
debate among "professionals."

"It is important to understand that there is almost always a considerable
difference between theoretical information and practical performances in the
field. Generally practical solutions to actual problems will be a mix of
both field experience and theoretical knowledge. The "what to" and "how to"
information supplied following problem descriptions [in this guidebook] is
intended to be such a blend.

"Sometimes, too, individual trades tend to have tunnel vision. It is
enormously common for individual tradesmen or contractors to present and
carry out solutions to problems. Many times the work will be carried out
quite well as per that trade but will negatively impact something else. For
instance, it is not uncommon for landscape contractors to beautify a yard
while unwittingly contributing to a water seepage condition in the basement.
Pest control contractors recommend increasing crawl space ventilation,
only to set up a freezing pipe situation. Siding installers frequently side
over attic vents, etc."

And it goes on . . . .

Does this ring a bell for anyone else, vis-a-vis the field of
childbirth/lactation consulting?
