My 1978-or-so Dr Spock book said, "In the afternoon, to give your baby a
change of scene, move him from his crib to a playpen," or something like
that. I wasn't the fastest learner, but even I could see that a comment
like that was from a different universe from the one my
I-can-barely-put-him-down-long-enough-to-wring-out-the-diapers child had
forced me into. I've often wondered what I'd be doing today if he'd been
placid...
