Maybe I'm more cynical, but I think the main reasons we have a hard time
"selling" breastfeeding are simpler than deep cultural aversions to
excretion or even the sexualization of breasts.
(1) Most people, including most health care professionals, do NOT think
breastfeeding is better than formula. They don't know about the research,
or they know about it, but they don't believe it. Breastfeeding may be 100%,
but formula is 99.9% -- so who cares?
(2) Most parents want child-rearing to be simple and easy and convenient,
and feeding the baby is the easiest thing to get other people to do. Just
like "Ferberizing" your baby is much easier than meeting its needs at night.
