I have a pregnant mother who is currently taking Topomax (Topiramate) for
seizure control of epilespy. She is being followed by a research group in
Boston. The mother was told by her OB to NOT breastfeed. I read about it in
Hale's book and an old JHL article on seizure meds. The problem is that I
couldn't find information regarding human clinical studies regarding safety
during lactation. (only some rodent model). Does anyone have experience
with this med? If so, does anyone know where I could send a milk sample to
detect the amount (if any) of this med. The mother wants to breastfeed but
her OB is saying without the AAP approval or clear human trials, he wants
her to avoid it. Yes, she will stay on it after delivery too. "They" are
worried the baby will become too sedated during the postpartum period if
nursed. I already called The Lactation Center. I also spoke with the people
who initially followed her...they only do pregnancy...one person said that
she never thought about what happens to the mothers after delivery in
regards to breastfeeding..since their specialty is pregnancy not lactation.
I asked them if they could help this mother. No word yet.
