In reply to L Rutledge's comment about her anesthesiologist husband not
being in favor of epidurals.....

          I just finished a Lamaze class that included a great couple who
helped so much to get across the idea that you "just might' be able to
give birth without an epidural ;-) He is an anesthesiologist and was so
helpful in answering questions from the other couples re epidural &
spinal anesthesia. They seemed to hang on his every word and he was able
to talk about why he and his wife had decided against an epidural with
such honesty and professionalism. I felt the class was able to appreciate
this information from him so much better than from myself who might be
perceived as telling them the same thing because it is "my job" as a
Lamaze instructor. We are in an area where 92% of hospital births involve
an epidural. We have 14 anesthesiologists on staff at "my" hospital where
we have approx. 2800 births per year.
