Norway closed its borders yesterday to import of meat and dairy products
from the European Union because of fear of spreading hoof and mouth disease
to Norwegian farm animals. I don't want to start a thread on the
appropriateness (or not) of this measure, it is just background info.
Today's paper has a story with a photo of mother, father and babe-in-arms in
front of the meat counter in a supermarket. The story is about hoarding and
higher prices. The caption: "Mama Liv Marit Hansen and papa Jarl Rasmussen
had the import ban in the backs of their minds while shopping yesterday
evening. But little Even, 3 months old, doesn't worry-- he prefers mama's
dairy products." The bold headline says "Little Even chooses mama's dairy
products". The text doesn't say much more, it is mainly a filler story, but
the family does say they can survive nicely without meat for weeks. I'm
sure our dairy industry is thrilled that they were more worried about having
to do without milk, yogurt and cheese, which constitute a large part of the
Norwegian diet. Unfortunately the story isn't in their on-line edition, so
you can't see the nice photo of a cute baby.
Rachel Myr in Norway but outside of Europe ;-)
