Dear wise women (and men) of lactation,
I have received a telephonic S.O.S. from a friend and client who, for the
third time, had lots and lots of milk, and now suddenly does not. With each
of her three babies, she initially produced enough milk to feed the
neighborhoods, then between three and months, suddenly had a significant dip
in supply. For example, she used to nurse this current little guy on one
breast, and pump 6-8 ounces from the other.
No hormonal contraceptives, no scheduled feeds, no long stretches without
breastfeeding (still nurses every 2-3 hours around the clock), no solid
foods, no formula supplementation, no medications, and no clue! as to why
this is happening AGAIN.
I have noticed this same phenomenon with a few of the most "productive"
moms in my practice in the past. Have you?
Any idea A)why this is happening, and B)how she might reverse it and
increase supply? Would domperidon be likely to be effective in a case like
this?
Eager to hear what you all have to say about this,
