Dear Susan, You can get a Candidate Information Guide with Current
Application Booklet by e-mailing <[log in to unmask]>
There are several "pathways" to becoming an LC. The folder states that
IBCLCs are educators, dieticians, nurses, physicians, physiotherapists,
social workers and skilled advocates. IBCLCs do come from a BROAD range of
occupations and by many strange and/or funny routes (frequently relating to
a struggle to BF on their own part). We also know LCs who are lawyers,
anthropologists, professors and lots of other neat occupations.
Folder dated 6/00 states:
Pathway A is Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral or 4 years post seconadary ed
PLUS a minimum of 2500 hours of practice as a breastfeeding consultant PLUS
a minimum of 30 hours of ed specific to BF within 3 years immed. prior to
taking the exam.
Pathway B an associate degree, including a diploma RN or at least 2 years
of post secondary academic credit PLUS 4000 hours of practice as a
breastfeeding consultant PLUS the 30 hours ed etc.
Pathway C has a bachelor's degree or higher with a concentration in human
lactation from an accredited institution inc. 900 precepted clinical hours
in human lactation
Alt Pathway: MD PLUS a minimum of 900 hours practice as a bf consultant
PLUS 30 hours ed etc.
There are some other exceptions etc.
I'm not positive if this is the most up-to-date info so I would suggest
writing for the info. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
