When I started out helping mothers with breastfeeding, more than twenty
years ago, we were always encouraging women to leave the hospital early. Our
experience was that the longer a mother stayed in the hospital, the more
likely she was to have problems with breastfeeding. Now we have short stays
for everyone, and they are suggesting longer hospital stays to deal with
breastfeeding problems. It sure didn't help twenty years ago!

I agree with Rachel that what we need is knowledgeable support for mothers
at home. It would definitely be less expensive than keeping healthy mothers
and babies in hospital longer!
